2017  — 70th Rio Vista Bass Derby Official Rules and Regulations

“Target length Striped Bass, Target length Sturgeon, Salmon by weight

  1. When is the Derby? Oct. 13,14,15, 2017.  This is a 3 day event. Fishing starts at 6 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017 and continues day and night until Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 3 p.m.
  1. How to Enter? Each angler in the derby must be 16 years or older and have purchased a registration ticket by midnight on Thursday October 12, 2016 for $40. All tickets must be purchased before Friday, October 13, 2017.  Tickets may be reserved for pick up either at the Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce Office by calling (707) 374-2700 or at the Official Weigh-In Station starting at 6 a.m., Friday, October 13, 2016. Credit Cards and Checks are accepted for payment. Derby registration tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. Hats are limited to the first 300 – first come, first served.

  1. Tickets Available for Purchase – THERE WILL BE TWO SETS OF TICKETS THIS YEAR   
    • ADULT TICKETS: $40.00 – Each participating angler must purchase a ticket.
    • KIDS TICKETS: $5.00 – Each angler must be 15 years of age or younger and can weigh-in
    • Striped Bass or Catfish. The Striped Bass must be a minimum legal size and not over 24 inches. Catfish can be any size. All other Rio Vista Derby rules and regulations apply.
    • Kids are NOT eligible for participation in the Adult Derby.
  1. Categories of Fish in the Bass Derby
    • Striped Bass.  The “Target Length” will be selected at the start of the tournament.  This measurement will be somewhere from 25 inches to 32 inches measured from the tip of the head with mouth closed, to the fork of the tail. The angler who enters the Striped Bass closest to the specified length without going over will win the First Place.  In case of a tie in the length, the winner will be determined by greatest weight; if that’s the same then by the first Striped Bass weighed in.  All CA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife regulations apply.
    • Sturgeon.  The “Target Length” will be selected at the start of the tournament. This measurement will be from 40 inches to 60 inches measured from the tip of the nose to the fork of the tail. The angler who enters the sturgeon closest to the specified length without going over will win First Place. In case of a tie in the length, the winner will be determined by the greatest weight. If that’s the same, then by the first sturgeon weighed in.  All sturgeon anglers must have a sturgeon report card and all sturgeon must be tagged at the time of the catch and brought to the Weigh-In Station with tag attached.
    • Salmon.  The angler who enters the salmon of the greatest weight will win First Prize. In case of a tie, the winner will be determined by the first salmon weighed in.
  1. Where Can I Fish?
    • Anglers may fish from San Francisco Bay to Sacramento. All fish must be weighed in at the Official Weigh Station at the foot of Main Street in Rio Vista. Check the weigh in times below at #10!!!
  1. How to find out the “Target Length”?
    • You may call the Rio Vista Chamber after 6 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017 at (707) 374-2424 and the voicemail will be set up with the target length information or you may go to the Chamber webpage www.bassfestival.com.
    • You may tune into Radio Rio at 91.5 FM or Bob Simms Outdoor Report at 6 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 on 1530 AM radio. The participating Bait Shops will post the “Target Lengths”.
  1. How do I Measure My Fish?
    • Striped Bass will be measured from the tip of the head (at the mouth) with the mouth closed, to the fork of the tail.
    • Sturgeon will be measured from the tip of the nose to the fork of the tail.
  1. What to Know about the Weigh-In
    • All fish entered in the Bass Derby must be measured and weighed in at the Official Weigh-In Station, staffed and managed by the California Striped Bass Association (CSBA) located at the foot of Main Street (in front of City Hall) in Rio Vista.
    • Each angler must present his or her own fish for measurement and weigh-in. The angler will provide the Weigh Master with information as to when and where the fish was caught. All anglers must present their numbered Derby ticket along with their Fishing license and Sturgeon Report Card if applicable and a photo ID at the time of the weigh-in.
    • Each angler may submit only one fish per category in the derby. Tickets will be marked accordingly and all fish will be marked for identification purposes.
    • The Weigh Master and/or official from the Department of Fish and Wildlife reserve the right to retain any fish in order to make a full investigation in any case where the weight or condition of the fish caught is challenged, or there may have been other violations of the derby rules or state and federal laws or breaches of good sportsmanship. The Weigh Master and/or official from the Department of Fish and Wildlife reserve the right to open and inspect any entry. The Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce shall form a committee for any investigation; the committee will include at least one representative from the following:  Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce and the California Striped Bass Association. This committee reserves the right to reject any entry. Their decisions will be final. All anglers must conform to all California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Coast Guard rules and regulations. In addition, any controversy or claim rising out of or relating to this contract, or the breach of this contract, shall be settled by arbitration at the participant’s expense.
  1. When are the Weigh-in Times?
    • Friday, October 13, 2017             6:00 am – 6:00 pm
    • Saturday, October 14, 2017       7:00 am – 6:00 pm
    • Sunday, October 15, 2017          9:00 am – 3:00 pm
  1. How to get to the Official Weigh-in Station
    • By River.  You may tie up at the Rio Vista City Dock at the foot of Main Street. You may also go to the City launch site.
    • By Car.  When entering Rio Vista on Highway 12, turn south at the Shell Station (5th Street).  Proceed on 5th Street until it dead ends at Montezuma Avenue. Turn left. Proceed to Front Street, another dead end. Turn left for 30 feet or so. Turn right into the city launch and parking lot. Park there (while your fish is weighed in) and walk to the weigh station on Main Street.
  1. What are the prizes
    • WINNER MUST BE PRESENT TO RECEIVE AWARDS

    • Winners are responsible for all state and federal taxes and registration if applicable.
    • The Rio Vista Bass Derby reserves the right to substitute prizes if necessary.
    • Additional prizes will be based on donations. Salmon inclusion is dependent upon water litigation and the Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations.

  1. Are there any other rules?
    • Fishing is at the participant’s risk.
    • Fishing guides under charter are not eligible to enter. However, their clients on charter may enter.
    • All clients on board must be entered in the Derby.
  1. Where and When are the awards presented?
    •  Awards are to be presented at 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at the foot of Main Street, Rio Vista. WINNERS MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN A PRIZE!!!
    • Winners will be posted at www.bassfestival.com
